Mechanical engineering bachelor while you work
In mechanical engineering the bachelor is the degree that opens the engineering profession at all. It is also one of the degrees with a high dropout rate, and the reason is not one providers like to write about.
When the bachelor is the right level
And when another level saves years.
The bachelor is your level if you do not yet hold an academic degree and want to move into an engineering role: design, development, calculation or production planning with your own responsibility. What the subject covers is set out on my page on mechanical engineering by distance learning.
Three cases in which another level is the better answer:
- You are missing only one tool, such as simulation or quality methods. University certificates worth 5 to 30 ECTS cover that, see continuing education while working.
- You already hold a technical bachelor. Then the master in mechanical engineering is next.
- You want to understand technology but steer commercially. Then industrial engineering fits better, with a lower calculation load.
And now the point I always raise before enrolment: mechanical engineering is among the most calculation-heavy distance degrees. A common reason for dropping out is not a lack of interest but a lost first semester in mathematics, which is hard to recover. On top of that come on-site lab dates. Who gets into the bachelor
The technical advancement route is the easiest way past the door.
A state-certified technician in mechanical engineering and an industrial master craftsman in metalworking open general university access in most German states. Without such a qualification, subject-linked access applies: a technical apprenticeship plus several years of relevant practice, depending on the state with an interview, an aptitude test or a trial semester. The variants are under studying without A-levels and master craftsman and bachelor credit.
The figure that exists only here: engineering bachelor's degrees are often advertised at 210 rather than 180 ECTS, so seven instead of six standard semesters. That is normal in the sector, and it often spares you a condition on a later master's degree.
The advice that helps most here and costs nothing: if your school mathematics is ten years behind you, take the preparatory maths course before the first semester, not alongside it. In this subject the first semester decides whether someone keeps going.
How long it actually takes
Calculation modules do not tolerate leftover minutes.
A bachelor worth 180 ECTS means nine years at 10 ECTS per semester and six years at 15 ECTS, and a 210-ECTS programme adds a year. Credit transfer is therefore the most important lever: if technician college, a master craftsman qualification and relevant practice are recognised with 60 ECTS, 120 remain. At 15 ECTS that is four years instead of six, at 10 ECTS six instead of nine.
Technician college overlaps mainly with the technical foundation modules, the master craftsman more with production and quality. An upper limit of 50 percent of a programme's ECTS usually applies, see credit transfer and credit for work experience.
One difference from business subjects: calculation modules need connected blocks of two to three hours. If you cannot cut your week that way, start with fewer ECTS instead of correcting your pace after a semester. The reasoning is under ECTS per semester and how long a part-time bachelor takes.

What the bachelor opens professionally
Enough for most engineering posts, but not all.
The bachelor takes you into design, work preparation, production planning, quality assurance, maintenance management, commissioning and technical sales. In mid-sized companies that is the entire engineering job market, and anyone coming from the shop floor knows what can actually be manufactured and what only works on screen.
Two limits belong with it. First, the professional title of engineer is protected by the engineering acts of the German states and normally requires a technical degree of at least three years with enough engineering content, assessed by the authority in your state. Distance learning is no disqualifier, but ask in advance. Second, some corporations advertise development and research posts only from master's level.

Not on interest, but on the first calculation-heavy modules. Advanced mathematics, engineering mechanics and thermodynamics build strictly on each other, and anyone who loses the thread in the first maths module still feels it three semesters later. The second reason is on-site dates for labs and exams.
180 or 210 ECTS, what is usual in mechanical engineering?
Engineering bachelor's degrees are often advertised at 210 rather than 180 ECTS, so seven instead of six standard semesters. That costs one to two extra semesters but often spares you a condition on a master's degree, because many are designed for 300 ECTS across both degrees.
Can I start the bachelor without A-levels?
