Mechanical engineering master while you work
The first question about a master in mechanical engineering is not which programme fits, but whether you need one at all. For many engineering posts it brings nothing. For some it is the formal condition. Here is which case is yours.
When the master is the right level
And when it costs two to four years that nobody pays for.
Four situations make a master pay off: research and development, where many posts are advertised from master's level upwards. Corporate career tracks with formal stages, where the degree is an entry condition. The senior technical service in public administration, which normally requires a master's or equivalent degree. And a doctorate, for which it is the regular admission requirement.
It does not pay off if you work in design, production planning, maintenance or technical sales in a mid-sized company and intend to stay there. In those roles another completed project weighs more than a second certificate. That is not an argument against the master, it is a question of sequence, see professional development or a degree.

Which bachelor is enough, and which is not
Two checkpoints, both costly if you clarify them too late.
The first checkpoint is the ECTS count. Many technical master's programmes are designed so that bachelor and master together add up to 300 ECTS. With 210 a 90-ECTS master fits. With 180, thirty points are missing and you make them up through bridging modules or an additional semester. In mechanical engineering that is the most common reason for a delayed admission.
The second is subject proximity. From mechatronics, process engineering, automotive engineering or a technical industrial engineering degree entry often works, usually with required modules. From a purely commercial bachelor there is no way in, and there the master in industrial engineering fits.

Two to four years, plus the thesis
Credit transfer is considerably smaller here than in the bachelor.
A 90-ECTS master means three years at 15 ECTS per semester and just over two at 20 ECTS. A 120-ECTS master adds two to three semesters, and 30 ECTS of bridging modules add another year.
Unlike in the bachelor, technician college, a master craftsman qualification and years of practice are hardly creditable at this level, because they sit below master's level. What is realistically recognised are modules from an earlier degree and university certificate courses. A typical calculation: 90 ECTS minus 15 from a certificate course leaves 75, so at 15 ECTS per semester two and a half years instead of three. The reasoning is under credit transfer and credit for work experience.
The item that tips timetables is the thesis, worth 15 to 30 ECTS, so 450 to 900 working hours. Writing it inside your own company is the biggest lever here: you solve a real problem and deliver visible work. Raise it early, because topic approval and confidentiality need lead time. Your pace comes from ECTS per semester.

What the master opens professionally
Three specialisations and a realistic view of the step.
In mechanical engineering the master is the level of specialisation, not of broadening. Three directions are common and lead into clearly different working days:
- Design and simulation. Calculation, finite element methods, lightweight construction, material selection. The route into development and analysis departments, quiet, detailed and documentation-heavy.
- Production and automation. Manufacturing technology, process planning, robotics, digitalisation on the shop floor. Closer to operations, often with staff and budget responsibility.
- Energy and drive technology. Thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, drives, plant engineering. In strong demand with energy suppliers, plant builders and suppliers.
The honest assessment of the step up: in the private sector the master rarely changes pay immediately, it changes the number of posts you are considered for at all. Do I need a master for an engineering position?
For most posts in design, production planning, maintenance and technical sales, no. It becomes necessary mainly in research and development, in corporate career tracks with formal stages, in the senior technical service and if you want to pursue a doctorate.
Can I enter the master with a 180-ECTS bachelor?
Often yes, but usually with a condition. Many technical master's programmes are designed for 300 ECTS across both degrees. If you bring 180, thirty points are missing and you make them up through bridging modules. With a 210-ECTS bachelor a 90-ECTS master fits without addition.
Can I enter with a bachelor from another field?
From neighbouring technical subjects often yes, so mechatronics, process engineering, automotive engineering or industrial engineering with a technical focus, usually with additional required modules in mechanics or thermodynamics. From a purely commercial bachelor there is practically no route into a mechanical engineering master.
Specialise or stay broad?
In mechanical engineering the master is the level of specialisation, and a broad profile achieves little. Common directions are design and simulation, production and automation, and energy and drive technology. Choose by target position, because switching later costs years.
Master or MBA after a mechanical engineering bachelor?
The master deepens the technology and is the route if you want to stay technically responsible. The MBA is a management degree without technical depth and requires several years of professional experience. It fits if you want to move out of engineering towards general management, not if you want to develop products.
