Why Swiss higher-education continuing study?

Six reasons for a Swiss CAS, DAS, or MAS

Switzerland has a continuing-education system at university level that does not exist in this form in DE or AT. Anyone working in Switzerland, looking to position themselves there, or aiming for a protected master title without a bachelor requirement finds the direct route here.

Tertiary Level A with university credential

CAS, DAS, and MAS are formal university credentials, awarded by state-accredited universities or universities of applied sciences. Not a private-academy certificate but an official Tertiary Level A qualification.

Credit transfer to a later master

CAS modules can be stacked into a DAS or MAS, provided the same provider designed the program for it. Saves time and tuition when scaling up later. I check the credit transfer practice in advance.

Funding options in Switzerland

Sectoral vocational training funds (construction, IT, hospitality, retail) co-finance part of it depending on the industry. Cantonal scholarships, time off for education, and tax deductions significantly reduce effective costs.

No AHV pension gap

Unlike a full-time master, in CAS, DAS, and MAS you stay in the first pillar (AHV) since the program is part-time. No contribution gap in old-age insurance, no need to catch up after the program.

Part-time with moderate load

Realistically 8 to 20 hours per week, depending on the level. CAS fits into 4 to 6 months alongside a full-time job, MAS takes 2 to 3 years. Buffer time and block modules make it manageable.

University reputation in the Swiss market

A MAS from a Swiss FH or university shows up on a CV like a classic master, plus practice orientation and small cohorts. Fully recognized in the Swiss labor market, evaluated across DACH via anabin and SBFI.

Before you decide, take a look at the academic degrees overview, an honest assessment of how much work experience can be credited, and concrete criteria around accreditation of universities and programs.

Decision

CAS, DAS, or MAS: when does what fit

Three levels, three profiles. Which fits depends on the goal, the time window, and the budget. I work through this methodically in the initial consultation.

  1. CAS, Certificate of Advanced Studies (10 to 15 ECTS)

The entry format. Module certificate from a university, 4 to 6 months in length, typically 5,000 to 9,000 CHF. Suited for a specific skill gap such as CAS Digital Marketing (FFHS, ZHAW, HWZ), CAS Mediation (University of St. Gallen, University of Bern), CAS Leadership, or CAS Data Science. Anyone planning to scale up later picks the program modularly: at providers like ZHAW, HSLU, or BFH, two or three CAS plus a diploma thesis combine into a DAS or MAS. Examples from the Swiss market are shown in the comparison table below.

  2. DAS, Diploma of Advanced Studies (30 ECTS)

The middle level. In-depth specialist continuing study over 1 to 2 years, 12,000 to 18,000 CHF. Usually built from two or three stacked CAS plus an independent diploma thesis. Examples: DAS Controlling (ZHAW, FHNW), DAS Business Informatics, DAS Public Management (BFH), DAS Coaching. Recognition in the Swiss labor market is high because it carries university authority. Anyone who stops after the DAS still holds a finished higher-education credential. In DACH comparison, the DAS is a Swiss particularity, since DE and AT have no direct equivalent.

  3. MAS, Master of Advanced Studies (60 ECTS)

The top level. Academic deepening study, 2 to 3 years, 25,000 to 40,000 CHF. Concludes with a protected master title: MAS in Business Administration (FHNW, HSLU), MAS in Real Estate Management (HSLU), MAS in Educational Leadership (University of Zurich), MAS in Mediation (University of St. Gallen), MAS in Software Engineering (HSLU). Also accessible without a bachelor, if 5 to 10 years of relevant work experience are documented (sur dossier). Important: the MAS is a continuing-education master and therefore not identical to a consecutive M.Sc. or M.A. under Bologna level 2. Fully recognized in the Swiss labor market, evaluated in DE and AT via anabin/NARIC, but usually not sufficient for a later doctorate at a Swiss university.

How I decide in the initial consultation: I listen to your career goal, check whether you work in Switzerland or commute, whether you want to do a doctorate later, and run through budget and time window. With a clear Swiss career, no doctoral plans, and 5+ years of practice, the MAS is often the direct route. With a cross-DACH career, we check the anabin entry in advance and consider the consecutive master as an alternative.

Recognition

Recognition across DACH

The Swiss MAS is Tertiary Level A. Anyone working across DACH should check before booking how the credential is rated in the target country.

Switzerland: SBFI and higher-education law

The State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SBFI) is the central recognition and evaluation authority for foreign credentials in Switzerland. CAS, DAS, and MAS are regulated in Swiss higher-education law as Tertiary Level A continuing-education titles. Universities and universities of applied sciences award them under their own study and examination regulations, secured by accreditation law. For professional use in the Swiss labor market, all three levels are fully recognized. For regulated professions (nursing, teaching, the bar), additional professional-practice requirements apply that are checked independently of the academic title. Beware of blanket recognition statements, practice always evaluates the individual case.

Germany: anabin and ZAB

Anyone using a Swiss MAS in Germany checks the rating via the anabin database of the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB). Accredited MAS from state-recognized Swiss universities and universities of applied sciences typically appear with the rating 'corresponds to master' or 'equivalent', provided the host university is listed as H+ in anabin. For regulated professions, additional recognition of professional practice is required. For non-regulated professions, the Bologna-compliant MAS suffices without further evaluation. CAS and DAS are listed less often in DE and are classified case by case via the ZAB Statement of Comparability, the effort and the duration (three to six months) should be planned in advance.

Austria: BMBWF and NARIC Austria

In Austria, NARIC Austria within the Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Research (BMBWF) is the contact point for evaluating Swiss credentials. MAS programs from Swiss universities are usually classified as master-equivalent, as long as the host university's accreditation is documented cleanly. Academic and professional recognition are separated in Austria: a recognized MAS says nothing about practicing a regulated profession, separate procedures via professional bodies or the ministry apply. For non-regulated professions (business, IT, marketing), the Bologna-compliant Swiss credential usually suffices in the Austrian labor market without formal evaluation.

Information Notice

The information on this page is general in nature and based on my advisory practice (last updated 10.05.2026). It does not replace an official credit transfer or recognition decision by the respective university and is not legal advice. Specific decisions are made by universities, the ZAB (Germany), the BMBWF (Austria), or the SBFI (Switzerland). I clarify binding next steps with you in the initial consultation.

The Swiss higher-education continuing-study market is large and highly differentiated. Universities, universities of applied sciences, and pedagogical universities award CAS, DAS, and MAS in many subjects, the selection is hard for outsiders to overview. The following table shows seven universities that play a central role in the Swiss market for working professionals, together with a relative classification of price level and format. Which provider fits you, we clarify in the initial consultation, because beyond format and price, credit transfer practice, faculty, and industry reputation also count.

Frequent questions

CAS, DAS, and MAS Switzerland, 12 questions from practice

Levels, costs, recognition across DACH, credit transfer to a later master. What comes up in the initial consultation on Swiss higher-education continuing study.

What's the difference between CAS, DAS, and MAS?

Three levels of higher-education continuing study in Switzerland. CAS (Certificate of Advanced Studies) covers 10 to 15 ECTS, takes 4 to 6 months, and addresses a specific skill gap. DAS (Diploma of Advanced Studies) covers at least 30 ECTS, takes 1 to 2 years, and usually consists of two or three CAS modules plus a diploma thesis. MAS (Master of Advanced Studies) covers at least 60 ECTS, takes 2 to 3 years, and concludes with a protected master title. You can stack multiple CAS into a DAS or MAS if the same provider designed the program modularly.

What does a CAS cost in Switzerland?

The range is typically 5,000 to 9,000 CHF for a CAS with 10 to 15 ECTS, depending on university and subject. Universities like St. Gallen or Zurich sit at the upper end, FHs like ZHAW, FHNW, HSLU, or BFH often in the middle, FFHS and cantonal providers somewhat lower. Add registration fees of around 200 CHF and literature costs. Most of it is tax-deductible as professional expenses (in most cantons up to 12,000 CHF per year under federal law).

Which Swiss universities offer MAS programs?

All state universities and universities of applied sciences plus several private institutions. Strong in the market: ZHAW (around 90 MAS programs), FHNW, HSLU, BFH, FFHS for online formats, University of Zurich, University of St. Gallen (Executive Education), University of Bern, EPFL and ETH for technical fields. Which provider fits depends on subject and format. ZHAW and FFHS are strong part-time, St. Gallen brands itself premium, BFH is strong in business and health. The comparison table above shows seven providers side by side.

MAS without a bachelor: is that possible?

Yes. Swiss universities admit MAS candidates without a bachelor if multi-year relevant work experience is documented (sur dossier). Common: 5 to 10 years of relevant practice plus leadership responsibility or specialist expertise. The assessment is case-by-case, not blanket. FFHS and several FHs actively use this admission path. For practitioners without a formal bachelor, the MAS thus often becomes the direct route to a protected academic master title without taking the bachelor detour.

Is a MAS equivalent to a consecutive master?

Academically not identical, in the Swiss labor market practically equivalent. The MAS is a continuing-education master at Tertiary Level A, the consecutive M.Sc. or M.A. is Bologna level 2. The MAS in Switzerland carries full master-title protection and opens the same career paths. Important caveat: for a later doctorate at a Swiss university, a consecutive master is usually required, the MAS only qualifies in exceptional cases with conditions. Anyone planning a doctorate should design the path early and pick the consecutive master instead.

Is a Swiss MAS recognized in Germany and Austria?

Yes, generally. Swiss MAS degrees are Tertiary Level A and are evaluated via the anabin database (DE) or NARIC Austria (AT). Accredited MAS from state-recognized Swiss universities usually appear with the rating 'corresponds to master' or 'equivalent'. For regulated professions (nursing, teaching, psychotherapy), additional recognition of professional practice via the relevant authority is needed. For non-regulated professions, the Bologna-compliant MAS is sufficient without evaluation. Before working abroad, an anabin check is worthwhile.

How long does a part-time CAS, DAS, or MAS take?

CAS typically 4 to 6 months (10 to 15 ECTS), DAS 1 to 2 years (30 ECTS), MAS 2 to 3 years (60 ECTS). Those who use the modular structure begin with a CAS, check the fit, and stack into a DAS or MAS if the program is designed for it. Realistic effort: 8 to 12 hours per week for a CAS, 12 to 15 for a DAS, 15 to 20 for a MAS. Exams and the diploma thesis significantly increase the burden in phases.

AZAV funding for a Swiss CAS possible?

No, AZAV is a German funding instrument for providers in Germany and does not apply to Swiss programs. Swiss CAS, DAS, and MAS are funded differently: via cantonal scholarships, sectoral vocational training funds (construction, IT, hospitality, retail), and tax deduction as professional expenses. Higher vocational education with federal exam is subsidized by the federal government with up to 50 percent of course fees, but this only applies to HFP and BP, not to higher-education CAS/DAS/MAS. Those financing a Swiss MAS from Germany check work-related expense deductions in the DE tax return.

CAS Digital Marketing: which Swiss university is reputable?

Several state-accredited providers with strong programs. ZHAW (CAS Digital Marketing at the Institute for Marketing Management), HWZ Zurich (CAS Digital Marketing & Communication), FFHS (CAS Marketing Management Online), FHNW, and HSLU offer comparable programs. Which fits depends on emphasis: performance marketing, B2B, branding, customer experience. ZHAW is strong in methodology and case work, HWZ stronger in practice application with industry lecturers, FFHS scores in the 100-percent-online format. In the initial consultation we clarify which emphasis and format suit your role.

Can a CAS be credited toward a later master?

Generally yes, if the provider and MAS come from the same higher-education system. Within Switzerland, CAS modules are very often credited 1:1 by ECTS toward a MAS at the same or another Swiss provider. For credit toward a consecutive M.Sc. or M.A. (Bologna level 2), practice is more restrictive: rarely more than 30 percent is accepted because the CAS is continuing education and the consecutive master is research training. In DACH comparison, anabin typically rates a well-accredited Swiss MAS at master level.

What sets Swiss universities apart from DE/AT?

Four structural differences: first, the tiered CAS-DAS-MAS system, which doesn't exist in this form in DE/AT. Second, the strong focus on dual education with vocational baccalaureate as the standard entry path to the FH. Third, considerably higher tuition fees in continuing education, but with higher service quality and smaller cohorts. Fourth, the SBFI as the central recognition authority that evaluates foreign degrees for Switzerland. Anyone working across DACH should check in advance which degree is recognized how in which country, especially for the DAS, since it has no direct equivalent in the DE/AT system.

How do I choose the right CAS, DAS, or MAS program?

Six criteria I work through in the initial consultation: accreditation and host university (state vs. private), subject fit to your current or target role, format (online, blended, on-site), payment plans and deferment options, credit transfer practice when stacking up to DAS or MAS later, and recognition in your DACH target country. If you live and work in Switzerland, a MAS is the safest choice. If you commute or want to return to DE/AT, check the chosen university's anabin entry and consider the consecutive master as an alternative.
