Civil engineering while you keep working

You grew up on site or in the office of a construction firm and want to plan rather than execute. The degree is the right route. One thing it does not hand you: the right to sign building submissions does not come with the certificate.

What civil engineering is, and what it is not

Two neighbouring subjects sit so close that confusing them gets expensive.

Civil engineering is the technical side of building. The core consists of engineering mechanics, structural analysis, materials science, geotechnics, structural design, site operations and, depending on your specialisation, hydraulic engineering, transport or infrastructure. You calculate whether something holds, and you organise how it comes into being.

  • Architecture is the design side. It leads through the chamber of architects to its own licence with its own minimum study duration and practice period. A civil engineering degree does not lead onto the architects' register, and the reverse holds as well.
  • Industrial engineering with a construction focus sits between technology and commerce: costing, tendering, project control, construction law. Less structural analysis, more contracts and deadlines, often the better cut for site management.
  • Building technician and site foreman qualifications are not degrees, they are the level below. They are, however, the best door-opener into this degree, see below.

And now the point that matters most on this page. Building submission rights and chamber registration do not come automatically with the degree. Both follow the state building codes and the chamber acts of the individual German states, and both are granted through entry on a list. What is typically required is a relevant civil engineering degree with a minimum share of construction-specific credit points plus several years of practical work in planning and supervision. The requirements differ noticeably between states, so ask the chamber of engineers in your state before you enrol whether the specific programme meets the conditions.

Admission

Also without A-levels, straight off the site

Anyone already carrying responsibility on site usually meets the conditions.

A state-certified building technician and a master craftsman in the building trades, for example in bricklaying and concrete construction or in carpentry, open general university access in most German states. The certified site foreman sits at a comparable level, but for university access the rules of your state apply, so ask the university. Without such a qualification the route runs through subject-linked access: a relevant apprenticeship plus several years of professional experience, depending on the state with a counselling interview, an aptitude test or a trial semester.

The typical feeder occupations are bricklayer, concrete and reinforced concrete worker, carpenter, road builder, construction draughtsman and surveying technician. One note on choosing a programme: make sure it is accredited and designated as civil engineering or equivalent, because for later chamber registration that designation is one of the checkpoints. What accreditation means is covered under accreditation of a degree.

Credit transfer

What technician college and site years are worth

A strong lever, but one with a catch you need to know about.

Technician college in construction is a formal qualification with documented learning outcomes and a substantial number of taught hours, and the overlap with the foundation modules is clear. Many universities have established credit routes for it. Years on site alone are less often recognised as a blanket block, but they support individual credit for single modules.

What that means in time is a simple calculation. Take a bachelor's programme worth 180 ECTS. If 60 of those are credited, 120 remain. At 15 ECTS per semester that is four years instead of six. Engineering bachelor's degrees are often advertised at 210 rather than 180 ECTS, though, which adds one to two semesters.

The catch in this subject: if you are aiming for building submission rights later, check the credit against the chamber's requirements. Several states require a minimum share of construction-specific credit points in the degree, and generous credit that saves you time can shift that profile. Not a reason to forgo credit, but a reason to plan both together rather than one after the other. One piece of advice I give more often in construction than anywhere else: plan unevenly. If you put in twelve-hour days on site in summer and fewer in winter, spread the semester load accordingly instead of booking the same number every term. Many providers allow that, you just have to raise it beforehand.

On cost, part-time bachelor's programmes usually sit in the range of a few hundred euros per month, plus travel and accommodation for on-site dates. Where the degree leads

Three directions that differ clearly in daily work and demands.

Structures and design

Structural analysis, dimensioning, verification, assessment of existing buildings. Office work with high responsibility, and where chamber registration counts most.

Site management and operations

Schedules, variations, quality, coordinating trades. Close to the action, much communication, for many the direct step up from execution.

Infrastructure and public sector

Roads, water, networks, building authorities and administration. Predictable hours, long procedures, more regulation than in private construction.

An honest word on pay: the degree alone does not change it, the changed position does. Anyone doing the same job after the degree typically earns the same. The step comes with the move into design, site management or project control. More on this under salary after your degree.

Two limits to close with. First, the professional title of engineer is protected by the engineering acts of the individual German states and normally requires a technical degree of at least three years of study with a corresponding share of engineering content. Second, building submission rights, chamber registration and special roles such as the checking engineer are separate procedures with their own practice periods. The degree is the ticket to the door, not the permission itself.

Depending on the provider that means single weekends per semester or regular Saturday sessions. Travel and accommodation therefore belong in your cost calculation.
