Civil engineering bachelor while you work
In construction the bachelor is the first degree that turns execution into planning. It does not open everything at once, and one of the most important doors stays shut for a while.
When the bachelor is the right level
And when another level gets you there faster.
The bachelor is your level if you do not yet hold an academic degree and want to move from execution into planning, site management or public administration. What the subject covers is set out on my page on civil engineering by distance learning. This page is about the level.
Three cases in which the bachelor is not the right answer:
- You already hold a relevant bachelor. Then the master's degree in civil engineering is the next step.
- You are missing only one topic, such as site management or costing. University certificates cover that in one to two semesters, see continuing education while working.
- You want a leadership role without technical depth. Then an MBA can be the more direct route, but only after several years of experience.
And the restriction most often overlooked here: the bachelor does not automatically bring building submission rights. Those follow the state building codes and require entry on a list held by the chamber of engineers, plus several years of practice. If that is your goal, plan backwards: ask the chamber first, then choose the degree.
Who gets into the bachelor
In construction the vocational route is the norm.
A state-certified building technician and a master craftsman in the building trades open general university access in most German states. Without such a qualification, subject-linked access applies: a relevant apprenticeship plus several years of professional experience, depending on the state with a counselling interview, an aptitude test or a trial semester. One figure exists only at this level: civil engineering bachelor's degrees are often advertised at 210 rather than 180 ECTS, so seven instead of six standard semesters. That is common in construction. The longer route costs one to two semesters but may spare you a condition on a later master's degree.
Make sure the programme is accredited and designated as civil engineering or equivalent, because for chamber registration that is a checkpoint, see accreditation of a degree.
How long it actually takes
The standard period in the brochure applies to full-time study.
A bachelor worth 180 ECTS means nine years at 10 ECTS per semester and six years at 15 ECTS. A 210-ECTS programme adds roughly a year. That is why credit transfer is not a side issue here.
The calculation with prior learning: if technician college, further training and relevant years on site are credited with 60 ECTS, 120 remain. At 15 ECTS per semester that is four years instead of six, at 10 ECTS six instead of nine. For learning acquired outside higher education an upper limit of 50 percent of a programme's ECTS usually applies, more under credit transfer and credit for work experience.
One point specific to this level: if you are aiming for building submission rights later, check the credit against the chamber's requirements, because several states expect a minimum share of construction-specific credit points. Your own pace comes from ECTS per semester and how long a part-time bachelor takes.

What the bachelor opens professionally
Where it meets a limit no certificate removes.
The bachelor takes you into the positions where successors are scarcest in construction: site management, work preparation, costing, project control and the technical service in building authorities. Anyone coming from execution brings an advantage no full-time graduate has. In structural design it is the entry point, but responsibility for verification depends on experience and on chamber registration.
Three limits, so they do not surprise you:
- Building submission rights and chamber registration are separate procedures with their own practice periods, so the degree is the ticket, not the permission.
- The professional title of engineer is protected by the engineering acts of the German states and normally requires a technical degree of at least three years with enough engineering content.
- The senior technical service in public administration normally requires a master's or equivalent degree.

Is the bachelor enough for building submission rights?
The bachelor is the precondition, not the entitlement. Building submission rights follow the state building codes and are granted through entry on a list held by the responsible chamber. Typically required are a relevant degree with a minimum share of construction-specific credit points plus several years of practice. Ask the chamber of engineers in your state before you enrol.
180 or 210 ECTS, which makes more sense in construction?
In civil engineering 210 ECTS is common, so seven rather than six standard semesters. The difference costs one to two semesters but may spare you conditions later, because many master's programmes require 210 ECTS. If a master's degree is on the horizon, the longer bachelor is the calmer choice.
Can I start the bachelor without A-levels?
As a rule, yes. A state-certified building technician or a master craftsman in the building trades opens general university access in most German states. Without such a qualification the route runs via a relevant apprenticeship plus several years of professional experience, depending on the state with a counselling interview, an aptitude test or a trial semester.
How long does the bachelor take alongside site work?
At 10 ECTS per semester around nine years, at 15 ECTS around six. With 60 ECTS credited that becomes six or four years. What counts is not the standard period in the brochure but your realistic pace.
Do I need a master's degree afterwards?
For site management, costing and project control usually not, experience counts for more there. For the senior technical service in public administration a master's or equivalent degree is normally required, and some corporate tracks expect it too. Decide afterwards, not in advance.
