Security management alongside your job
You come from the police, the armed forces or corporate site security and want to translate that experience into a civilian leadership role. Security management is the subject for it, with one detail many people miss: it is a management degree, not a technical one.
Positioning
What security management is, and what it is not
Three fields carry similar names and demand completely different minds.
Security management treats security as a leadership task inside an organisation. Programmes cover risk analysis and risk control, site and event security, crisis and emergency management, business continuity, security law, compliance, plus business administration and staff management. You learn to plan, procure, steer and justify security services in front of a board. It is a management degree with a security focus, not a substitute qualification for operational duty.
The distinction to make before you choose:
- Corporate asset protection is the narrower strategic slice: protecting know-how, countering espionage and sabotage, dealing with economic crime. Most programmes carry it as a specialisation.
- IT security is technical and sits closer to computer science. If you want to harden networks and analyse attacks, that is the better home, see computer science by distance learning.
- Occupational safety overlaps thematically but is regulated separately. Appointment as a German occupational safety specialist requires its own legally prescribed training, which a management degree does not replace.
- Public management is the route if you want to stay inside a public authority and move up there, see public management by distance learning.
And the most important limit right here: anyone working independently in the German security industry, or deployed as security personnel, needs the proof of competence under Section 34a of the Trade Regulation Act. Which qualifications grant exemption is listed conclusively in the Bewachungsverordnung, and a security management degree is not automatically among them. Clarify this with your chamber of commerce before you enrol.
Admission
Without Abitur, and your service counts
Most applicants arrive with a uniform in the CV, not with a school certificate.
Completed vocational training plus several years of relevant professional experience opens university access for a subject-related degree with many providers. The typical backgrounds in this field:
- Soldiers on fixed-term contracts. Usually with career courses, leadership experience and a clear deadline behind them, because the move into civilian life is coming anyway.
- Police officers moving into the private sector or positioning themselves for life after the service, see also changing careers through a degree.
- Qualified protection and security specialists from the guarding industry, with recognised training and documented years on assignment.
- Holders of the Meister qualification in protection and security. This advanced vocational qualification brings general university entrance in many federal states, more under Meister and bachelor.
Which route applies to you depends on the higher education act of your federal state and on the provider. The three usual variants are set out on studying without Abitur.
Credit transfer
What years of service are worth, and what they are not
Credit follows documentation. Experience on its own is not enough.
In this field the credit award is typically smaller than in nursing or early childhood education, and the reason is not the quality of the experience but its documentation. Universities credit what can be evidenced with content, hours and an assessment: career courses, Meister examinations, certified training. Ten years of patrol or guard duty do not qualify on their own, however unsatisfying that sounds.
The arithmetic on a realistic example: a bachelor's degree carries 180 ECTS. If a Meister examination, courses and relevant working years together bring 30, then 150 remain. At 15 ECTS per semester that is ten semesters, so five years instead of six. For learning acquired outside higher education, a ceiling of 50 percent of a programme's ECTS normally applies.

Time and cost, realistically
Rotating shifts and study do work together, but only with an honest semester load.

On funding there is a route here that barely exists elsewhere: soldiers on fixed-term contracts are supported in their move into civilian working life by the career transition service of the Bundeswehr, which can fund part-time degree programmes. Entitlement, scope and timing depend on length of service and on the rules in force. The most common mistake is not the wrong programme, it is the late appointment.
Without that funding, part-time bachelor programmes typically sit at a few hundred euros per month, details under what distance learning costs. Where the degree leads
Three directions that differ sharply in daily routine and demands.
Security services
Site, area or branch management with a service provider. Responsibility for shift teams, pricing and client relationships. The fastest route up, in exchange for high turnover in the team.
Crisis and critical infrastructure
Emergency and crisis management with operators in energy, water, transport or health. Heavy on regulation and documentation, in high demand and comparatively well paid.
An honest assessment also names the doors this degree does not open. Entry into the police, customs or intelligence services follows its own selection procedures, which a distance degree does not reach into, and the proof of competence under Section 34a remains a separate hurdle. Common questions
Security management by distance learning
The questions that come up in almost every first consultation.
Does the degree replace the German security guard examination?
As a rule, no. Who is exempt from the competence examination under Section 34a of the German Trade Regulation Act is listed conclusively in the Bewachungsverordnung, and those exemptions are narrowly drawn. A security management degree is not automatically among them. If you want to register a security business or be deployed as security personnel, clarify the required proof with your local chamber of commerce first.
Can I study security management without Abitur?
With many providers, yes. Completed vocational training plus several years of relevant professional experience opens access to a subject-related degree, and security professions clearly qualify as related. Advanced vocational qualifications such as the Meister in protection and security bring general university entrance in many federal states.
Will the German armed forces fund the degree?
For soldiers serving on a fixed-term contract this is a real route. The career transition service of the Bundeswehr supports the move into civilian working life and can fund part-time degree programmes. Entitlement, scope and timing depend on your length of service and the rules in force. Speak to your adviser early, the deadlines are the most common stumbling block.
How does this differ from IT security?
Security management is organisational and commercial, IT security is technical. In the curriculum that means risk analysis, site protection, crisis and emergency management, security law and staff management rather than networks, cryptography and programming. The two fields meet around critical infrastructure, but they call for different skills.
Does my time with the police or the armed forces count?
Partly, and it depends on documentation. Credit is awarded for what you can evidence with content, hours and an examination, so career courses and certified training. Years of service without paperwork are not enough on their own. Request your course certificates early, in both organisations it takes longer than people expect.
