The subject has a reputation for offering too little of both worlds. Sometimes that is true, sometimes it is exactly the right degree. What the difference hangs on is set out here, with admission, credit transfer and workload.

Industrial engineering sits at the interface between technology and business administration. The core consists of technical foundations such as mathematics, physics, materials and manufacturing, alongside cost accounting, procurement, production management, logistics, controlling and commercial law. Most programmes carry a specialisation, usually mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction or logistics, and that choice shapes your profile more than the degree title.
And now the criticism you find in every forum: that you learn too little of both. The objection is not made up. A bachelor's degree here has neither the calculation depth of a mechanical engineering degree nor the commercial depth of a business degree, and within one programme that cannot be fitted in. What matters is what the degree builds on.
If you come from a technical trade, know the shop floor and want to grow into the commercial side, you bring the depth from practice and add to it in your studies. That profile is in demand precisely because it can translate between development, manufacturing and purchasing. If you enter with neither background and pick no specialisation, you end up exactly where the criticism points. The consequence is simple: choose your specialisation early and make your own work experience the anchor.
No other engineering subject accepts this many different backgrounds.
Admission here works from both sides. From the technical side, a state-certified technician and an industrial master craftsman open general university access in most German states. From the commercial side, a certified business specialist and a certified business administrator do the same. Without such a qualification the route runs through subject-linked access: an apprenticeship plus several years of relevant practice, depending on the state with a counselling interview, an aptitude test or a trial semester. Both technical and commercial occupations can count as relevant, which widens the circle compared to the pure engineering subjects.

The share of mathematics is lower than in mechanical engineering, but it is there. Statistics, investment appraisal and the technical foundation modules assume confident arithmetic. If your school mathematics is a long way back, take the preparatory course.

Industrial engineering is one of the few subjects where two different qualifications feed into the same degree. A technician or master craftsman matches the technical modules, a business specialist or administrator the commercial ones. Anyone bringing both, which happens in industry more often than you would think, comes close to the usual ceiling of 50 percent of a programme's ECTS.
What that means in time is a simple calculation. Take a bachelor's programme worth 180 ECTS. If 60 are credited, 120 remain. At 10 ECTS per semester, which is realistic alongside a full-time job, that is six years instead of nine. You have changed nothing about your daily routine and saved three years.
The order matters. Clarify the credit first, then choose the university. With identical prior learning the differences between providers are considerable, and the business specialist qualification in particular is assessed very differently from place to place. One practical advantage over electrical engineering and civil engineering: the lab share is smaller and many modules can be worked through entirely off site. On-site dates remain for exams and project work, but the number of compulsory appointments is smaller. If you travel a lot, you are more likely to find a programme here that fits.
On cost, part-time bachelor's programmes usually sit in the range of a few hundred euros per month. And one limit worth knowing: the degree does not automatically entitle you to use the protected professional title of engineer. That title is governed by the engineering acts of the individual German states and requires a technical or scientific degree with a corresponding share of engineering content. With programmes carrying a high business share that is not guaranteed, and there are court decisions on the point. If the title matters to you, have the programme checked by the responsible authority in your state before you enrol. For most roles in purchasing, controlling and project management the title plays no part.
