Industrial engineering bachelor while you work
This is the level at which the subject either becomes a sought-after bridging profile or the familiar reproach that you know too little of both. The difference is two decisions taken before you enrol.
When the bachelor is the right level
And how to stop it blurring the profile.
The bachelor is your level if you want to move from a specialist role into a bridging role, so purchasing, costing, project control or technical sales, and do not yet hold an academic degree. What the subject covers is set out on my page on industrial engineering by distance learning.
At this level two things decide whether the profile holds:
- Your professional experience is the anchor. A bachelor here has neither the calculation depth of a mechanical engineering degree nor the commercial depth of a business degree, which cannot fit into one first degree. The depth comes from your practice.
- The specialisation belongs at the start. Mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction or logistics shape your profile more than the programme title. Choosing late gives away the sharpness the subject is criticised for lacking.
Two cases in which a different level fits: if you already hold a bachelor, the master in industrial engineering is next. If you genuinely want to design and calculate, the bachelor in mechanical engineering is the more honest choice.
Admission from two directions
No other engineering subject accepts such a range.
From the technical side, a state-certified technician and an industrial master craftsman open general university access in most German states. From the commercial side, a certified specialist and a business administrator do the same. Without one, subject-linked access applies: an apprenticeship plus several years of relevant practice, depending on the state with an interview, an aptitude test or a trial semester. An honest warning: the mathematics component is lower than in mechanical engineering, but it is there. Statistics, investment appraisal and the foundation modules assume confident arithmetic, so take the preparatory course most providers offer.
Unlike the pure engineering subjects, the lab component is small, and on-site attendance remains mainly for exams and project work. If you travel a lot, you are more likely to find a programme here that fits, see also career change through a degree.
The subject with two sources of credit
Technical and commercial prior learning both pay in.
Industrial engineering is one of the few subjects in which two different advanced qualifications feed into the same degree. A technician or master craftsman matches the technical modules, a certified specialist or business administrator the commercial ones. Anyone bringing both gets close to the usual 50 percent limit.
The calculation: a bachelor is worth 180 ECTS, or 210 in technically weighted programmes. With 60 credited, 120 remain. At 10 ECTS per semester, realistic alongside a full-time job, that is six years instead of nine, at 15 ECTS four instead of six.
The sequence matters: settle the credit first, then choose the university. The procedure is under credit transfer and credit for work experience, your pace under ECTS per semester and how long a part-time bachelor takes.

What the bachelor opens professionally
Three roles where the bridge pays, plus one limit.
The bachelor takes you into purchasing and supply chain, where technical understanding is the difference between pushing prices and negotiating, into costing and controlling, and into project and process roles that translate between development, production and purchasing. All three ask for what specialists lack: you understand both sides well enough to bring them together.
The limit you need to know: the degree does not automatically entitle you to the protected professional title of engineer. It is governed by the engineering acts of the German states and requires enough engineering content, which programmes with a high commercial share do not guarantee. For posts in purchasing, controlling and project management the title plays no role, for an application as a development engineer it does.

Does the bachelor give me a sharp profile or only half-knowledge?
That is decided not by the programme but by what you bring. Anyone coming from a technical or commercial occupation has depth from practice and adds the second side during the degree. Anyone entering without either and choosing no specialisation does end up at the familiar reproach.
Which specialisation should I choose?
The specialisation shapes your profile more than the programme title. Common ones are mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction and logistics. Choose the one you work in or want to work in, because it decides whether HR departments read you as technical or as commercial. That choice belongs at the start.
Can I start the bachelor without A-levels?
As a rule, yes, and unusually many prior qualifications fit here. A technician, an industrial master craftsman, a certified specialist or a business administrator opens general university access in most German states. Without one, the route runs via an apprenticeship plus several years of practice, and technical and commercial occupations qualify equally.
How much is credited from technician and specialist qualifications?
Often more than in other subjects, because two sides can be credited. A technician or master craftsman matches the technical modules, a certified specialist or business administrator the commercial ones. Anyone bringing both gets close to the usual upper limit of 50 percent of the ECTS, though assessment differs between universities.
May I call myself an engineer after the bachelor?
Not automatically. The title is protected by the engineering acts of the German states and requires a technical or scientific degree with enough engineering content. With programmes carrying a high commercial share this is not guaranteed. If the title matters, have the programme assessed before you enrol.
