Social management bachelor while you keep working
In this subject the level decides more than in any other, because it fixes which posts are open to you afterwards. A bachelor in social management does not usually lead to state recognition, and that has to be clear beforehand.
When the bachelor is the right level
And why choosing the level here also means choosing a professional status.
The most important sentence first: a bachelor in social management does not usually lead to state recognition as a social worker. That protected professional title depends on a degree in social work built for the purpose, including the practical components required by state law. How the procedure works is set out under social work and state recognition, and the subject boundaries on the subject page social management by distance learning.
That gives a clear rule for the first degree:
- You want to keep both open, casework now and leadership later? Then take social work at bachelor level and move into social management with a master afterwards. That order delivers the recognition and the business depth, the reverse order does not supply the recognition retrospectively.
- You want to go expressly into steering, already work in administration, controlling or a provider head office and do not need casework? Then the social management bachelor is the direct route.
- You already hold a social pedagogy qualification and only want to add the management side? Then check first whether a Fachwirt or a certificate course is enough, see continuing education or a degree.
How you get into this level
The typical student arrives with practice and first team responsibility.
A bachelor requires a university entrance qualification, and in this field it almost always comes through work. A completed apprenticeship in social care or health plus several years of experience opens access to a subject-related degree with many providers. The three formal routes are set out under studying without Abitur.
The Fachwirt in social and health services is the special case here. As a regulated advanced vocational qualification it brings general university access in many federal states and is at the same time the strongest basis for credit in this subject, see advanced vocational qualifications and credit.
One note that saves a semester: recognition of your entrance qualification and credit for your prior learning are two separate procedures with different responsibilities. Treating them as one application costs time.
How long it actually takes
Alongside a leadership post the honest semester load is lower than you hope.
A bachelor comprises 180 ECTS, in some programmes 210. Anyone co-responsible for a facility has no reliable week: sick notes, inspections and occupancy questions arrive unannounced and usually in the evening. Twelve ECTS with a buffer often carry better here than fifteen without, see ECTS per semester.
The arithmetic with prior learning: credit 60 ECTS for the Fachwirt and relevant years of practice and 120 remain. At 12 ECTS per semester that is ten semesters, so five years instead of seven and a half. For learning acquired outside higher education a cap of 50 percent of the ECTS usually applies.
Clarify the credit first, choose the university second, because with identical paperwork the gap between providers is easily two semesters. The procedure is explained under credit transfer, and providers are documented at Hochschulnavigator.
The levels in social management side by side
Four routes, four purposes, and only one matches your starting point.
| Level | Volume | Part-time duration | Access | Purpose in social care |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Certificate | usually 5 to 30 ECTS | a few months to 2 semesters | often without a formal degree | closing a gap, such as fee negotiation or quality management |
| Bachelor | 180 ECTS, some 210 | 8 to 12 semesters | Abitur or vocationally qualified | first academic degree, entry into leading a facility |
| Master | 60 to 120 ECTS | 4 to 6 semesters | first higher education degree | leadership at providers and associations, executive level |
| MBA | 60 to 120 ECTS | 4 to 6 semesters | degree plus several years of practice | general management, usually without social law content |
Typical ranges, not commitments by individual universities. The programme regulations are the binding source. More under bachelor while working and social management as a master.
What the bachelor opens, and what it does not
Honestly both, and the second half is rarely said out loud.
The bachelor opens leading a facility or a division, plus administration and controlling at provider head office and grant and project work with associations and foundations. It also opens the route to a master.
It does not open posts tied to a social pedagogy qualification. In parts of German child and youth services, public providers advertise their leadership posts accordingly, and a pure management degree does not help there. So read the job adverts in your target area before you enrol. On pay, what applies across social care applies here: the degree alone changes little, the new post and its pay grade change a lot, see salary after your degree. Which route carries your case is something I clarify with you in the initial consultation.
Social management bachelor part-time
The questions that come up in almost every first conversation.
Does a social management bachelor lead to state recognition?
As a rule, no. State recognition as a social worker in Germany depends on a degree in social work built for that purpose, including the practical components required by state law. Social management qualifies you for steering and leadership. Individual programmes combine both, but that is the exception and should be confirmed in writing before you enrol.
Bachelor in social work or in social management?
Anyone wanting to keep both options open normally takes social work at bachelor level and moves into social management with a master afterwards. That order secures state recognition and delivers the business depth later. The reverse order does not supply the recognition retrospectively.
Can I study social management without a university entrance qualification?
With many providers, yes. A completed apprenticeship in social care or health plus several years of work experience opens access to a subject-related degree. A Fachwirt in social and health services additionally brings general university access in many federal states.
Which prior qualification earns the most credit?
The commercial route, above all the Fachwirt in social and health services, because its content overlaps with the business and legal modules. A purely pedagogical apprenticeship is recognised but usually earns fewer points here than it would in an education degree. A cap of 50 percent of the ECTS is the norm.
Which leadership posts does the bachelor open?
Mainly leading a facility or a division, plus administration, controlling and grant work at provider level. It does not open posts tied to a social pedagogy qualification, and those exist in parts of German child and youth services. Check the job adverts in your target area before you enrol.

The information on this page is general in nature and based on my advisory practice (last updated 31.07.2026). It does not replace an official credit transfer or recognition decision by the respective university and is not legal advice. Specific decisions are made by universities, the ZAB (Germany), the BMBWF (Austria), or the SBFI (Switzerland). I clarify binding next steps with you in the initial consultation.
