Engineering distance study with a clear profile.
WBH is not an all-round university. It has been specialised on engineering, computer science, industrial engineering and design since 1997 and ranks among the largest private distance providers in Germany in these fields.
Operator is — via Hochschule für Berufstätige Darmstadt GmbH — the Klett Group, one of the most established education holdings in Europe. WBH has been state-recognised on an indefinite basis since 2008, is ZFU-licensed, system- and programme-accredited via ACQUIN (most recent system accreditation 2024, valid for eight years) and carries the Top Distance University 2026 seal. StudyCheck has rated it highly recommendable seven years in a row.
Students choose between two formats. The classical distance study is tutorially supported self-study without fixed dates. The online evening study runs with fixed live webinars in the evening within a shared cohort. Both formats are designed to run alongside work and combine with prior credit via the credit recognition guarantee.
A speciality is the consistent use of AI. KILEA is the WBH AI learning assistant, available around the clock. The AI Writing Workshop helps with term papers, the Creative AI Workshop supports designers. AI complements classical tutoring without replacing it.

Studies and admission
What is the difference between distance study and online evening study at WBH?
The classical distance study is tutorially supported self-study without fixed dates. You schedule the material yourself. The online evening study runs with fixed live webinars in the evening with a cohort of fellow students moving through the same modules together. Both formats are designed to run alongside work.
Can I study at WBH without a high-school diploma?
Yes. Vocationally qualified candidates with a Master craftsman, Fachwirt or comparable qualification can study without a high-school diploma. With several years of relevant work experience there are further routes. In a first call I check what is realistic for your profile.
What does the credit recognition guarantee at WBH mean?
Prior learning from vocational training, continuing education or earlier studies can be credited. Via the digital AVL tool (Anrechnung von Vorleistungen) you check up front what works. In total this saves time and money, especially for lateral entrants.
What is KILEA?
KILEA is WBH's AI learning assistant, available around the clock. It supports questions on study content and works alongside the online campus, the WBH app, the AI Writing Workshop and the Creative AI Workshop. It complements personal tutoring rather than replacing it.
What funding options are available?
Athlete scholarships, Bundeswehr support, volunteer programme, student-refers-student incentive and general funding routes such as Aufstiegs-BAföG. In the first call we check what makes sense for your profile.
