Marketing master alongside your job

With a marketing master one uncomfortable question comes first: does it count in your target field at all. Here is where it makes the difference, where it does not, and how admission works with an unrelated bachelor.

Where it sits

When the master is the right level, and when it is not

The level costs three to four years. It should also be counted in your target field.

The master is the right level if you want to own strategy rather than execution: positioning, portfolio, pricing logic, market research, running a team or a brand area. It pays off above all where degrees are formally checked, so in industry and large companies, in consulting and in the public sector.

It is the wrong level in three cases:

  • Without a first degree. Then the route runs through the marketing bachelor. Routes without a bachelor exist and are narrow, see a master without a bachelor.
  • If agency or performance work stays your target field. There shown impact decides. Three strong case examples are worth more than a second degree.
  • If you want to become a generalist. That is what the MBA is built for, the comparison is under MBA or master. What the subject covers is under marketing by distance learning.
Admission

Which bachelor counts, and which only with conditions

Marketing attracts career changers, so the admission question comes up especially often.

The fewest follow-up questions arise, in my experience, with a bachelor in marketing, business administration, business psychology, or communication and media studies with a commercial component. What counts is not the programme title but whether your modules cover the foundations the master builds on.

Admission with conditions applies to unrelated degrees, and in marketing that affects many people: design, languages, social sciences, engineering. Most programmes expect statistics, market research and accounting to a minimum volume. Where that is missing, bridging modules are added before or alongside the programme, so have your module list checked in advance.

Add the second number: bachelor and master combined are usually expected to add up to 300 ECTS. With 180 from the bachelor a 120 ECTS master fits, with 210 a 90 ECTS one. What work experience is worth at admission is under a master after career experience.

Timeframe

Duration and credit, and why the lever is smaller here

The large time saving from the bachelor does not repeat itself at this level.

A master covers 60, 90 or 120 ECTS depending on the programme. Alongside a full-time job, 15 ECTS per semester is a dependable figure, 20 works in phases. So 120 ECTS at 15 per semester is eight semesters, meaning four years, and three at 20. A 90 ECTS master takes six semesters at 15, so three years.

Unlike in the bachelor, work experience is hardly credited in a master. Ten years of campaign practice do not replace a module in multivariate statistics. Creditable is more likely a relevant university certificate or modules from an earlier degree. Whether anything applies in your case is shown by the credit check, the basics are under crediting ECTS.

Work out your own semester load with ECTS per semester. Providers across the German-speaking region are compared with sources on Hochschulnavigator.

Comparison

The four levels in marketing side by side

The same question of every row: what does it cost, and what does it deliver.

LevelSizeDuration part-timeAccessPurpose
Certificate5 to 30 ECTS, sometimes noneweeks to a yearusually open, often no university access neededone skill, such as analytics or paid search
Bachelor180, sometimes 210 ECTS4.5 to 9 years depending on load and credituniversity entrance or vocationally qualifiedfirst degree, the formal entry ticket
Master60 to 120 ECTS2 to 4 yearsa first degree, often with conditionsstrategy, market research, leadership
MBA60 to 120 ECTS2 to 4 yearsfirst degree plus several years of practicemanagement across functional boundaries

Calculated with 10 to 15 ECTS per semester, the band that holds up alongside a full-time job.

What stands out is how similar the lower two rows feel day to day and how differently they are valued. A certificate makes you better tomorrow, a master makes you deployable differently in four years. Confusing the two means picking by instinct instead of by goal. The upper levels are under part-time master and part-time bachelor.

Afterwards

Which step up the master realistically carries

It shifts the role, and it does not do so equally strongly everywhere.

Realistic are team leadership in marketing, ownership of a brand or product line, strategy and portfolio work, market research with your own methodology, plus a move into consulting, where the degree is often an entry requirement. A doctorate needs a master as a precondition anyway.

Not realistic is a step up on the certificate alone. In agencies and performance marketing shown impact remains the main argument, and leadership grows out of responsibility you are given and carry, not out of a diploma. In those fields a master without demonstrable results even invites questions.

On salary: the degree alone rarely changes it, the changed role does, see salary after your degree. Whether it pays off in your target field is something I go through with you in the initial consultation.

Common questions

The marketing master

The questions that come up on this level in almost every consultation.

Does a marketing master actually pay off?

That depends on your target field, and the answer varies more here than elsewhere. In industry, large companies, consulting and the public sector the master is often the formal threshold for leadership posts. In agencies and performance marketing demonstrable impact counts for more, and the time is better invested in results.

Can I enter with an unrelated bachelor?

Often yes, usually with conditions. Many programmes expect commercial and methodological prior learning, typically statistics, market research and accounting. If it is missing, bridging modules are required. Have the admissions office check your module list in advance.

Does work experience get credited in a master?

Far less often than in a bachelor. Master modules aim at depth and methodology, and there are few equivalents outside higher education. What can be credited is more likely a relevant university certificate or modules from an earlier degree. Do not plan with the same time saving you had at bachelor level.

Is a marketing master research-oriented or applied?

Both exist, and the difference belongs before your choice. Applied programmes emphasise strategy, brand and sales steering and use case studies. Research-oriented ones emphasise methodology, statistics and empirical market research and prepare for a doctorate. Read the module plan, not the title.

Master or MBA in marketing?

The master deepens the subject and goes into methodology and strategy. The MBA broadens you across finance, people and operations and requires several years of practice. Want to keep owning marketing, take the master. Want to move into overall steering, take the MBA.
