Education studies master alongside your job
The master is the level where delivery turns into design. This page covers entry, including from other fields, adult education and education management, and the route to a doctorate. On the subject itself see education studies by distance learning.
When the master is the right level
And the one sentence that applies at this level too.
A master in education studies does not lead into state school teaching either. This belongs here because the title confuses people: the school service requires a teacher training degree for the specific school type, normally completed with a state examination or a Master of Education, followed by the preparatory service. A master in education studies is a different qualification, even though both are called a master. Recognition is decided by the federal states, not by the university.
The master is right if you want one of three things. A leadership role at a provider, an education charity or in people development, where a master is formally required. The design level, meaning building programmes, curricula and qualification pathways instead of delivering courses. Or research methods, because evaluation, needs analysis and evidence of impact have long been standard in funded projects and cannot be delivered without method knowledge.
It is the wrong level if you hold no first degree at all, in which case the route starts with the bachelor in education studies. And it is wrong if you only need one tool, for instance facilitation method or a learning platform topic. A university certificate covers that, see continuing education alongside work. How the level works in general is under part-time master.
Which bachelor is enough, and which is not
One of the most open subjects on content, one of the strictest on ECTS volume.
What is required is a first degree that qualifies you for a profession. Clearly related are education science, social work, psychology, sociology and neighbouring fields. Entering from another field is often possible, and more often than in most subjects: anyone from business, health or engineering who has spent years training, teaching or running development programmes brings exactly the practice the subject is about. What is then required is usually educational or social science content from the first degree, relevant practice, or bridging modules in research methods and statistics.
The second point costs more people their place than the first. Many master programmes require 210 ECTS on entry, while a part-time bachelor often carries only 180. Three routes close that gap of 30 points:
- A 120 ECTS master that accepts 180 on entry, because the usual 300 ECTS are reached at the end.
- Bridging modules before or alongside the start, usually one extra semester.
- Credit for relevant professional practice against the missing points, where the university provides for it.
Without any first degree a master is possible only in narrow exceptions, see master without a bachelor. If you are coming from practice, the frame is under master after work experience. Always submit module descriptions, not just the certificate, otherwise your prior learning gets underestimated.
How long it really takes
A master credits far less than a bachelor, and that is normal.
Master programmes sit between 60 and 120 ECTS. The arithmetic: 120 ECTS at 15 ECTS per semester makes eight semesters, so four years. At 10 ECTS per semester it becomes six. A 90 ECTS programme at 15 ECTS per semester takes three years. The thesis usually occupies one of those semesters, and in this subject it is often empirical, so it needs data collection, analysis and more connected time than any module before it.
On credit transfer, a sober expectation: at master level universities credit far more cautiously than in a bachelor. Work experience, practice instruction and trainer aptitude have their big moment in the bachelor, here they work more as an admission argument. Realistically creditable are single modules from an earlier, unfinished master programme and university certificates that carry ECTS. How the process works is under crediting ECTS and credit for work experience.
Which universities in the German-speaking region run suitable programmes is best compared on Hochschulnavigator. If you work for an education provider or an institution, a conversation about a contribution to the fees is worth having, see getting your employer to pay.
The levels in this subject compared
Four routes, one field, very different purposes.
| Level | ECTS | Part-time duration | Access | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University certificate | 5 to 30 | 1 to 2 semesters | often without a first degree, work experience is frequently enough | add one topic, no academic degree |
| Bachelor | 180, sometimes 210 | 6 to 9 years, 4 to 6 with credit | A-levels or vocational training plus years of work | first degree, entry into adult education and education organisation |
| Master | 60 to 120 | 3 to 5 years | a first higher education degree, often 210 ECTS required | leadership, programme design, research methods, access to a doctorate |
| MBA | 60 to 120 | 2 to 4 years | first degree plus several years of work experience | business administration and leadership, no depth in education science |
Calculated with 10 to 15 ECTS per semester and 30 hours per ECTS. The ranges are guide values, the binding source is each programme's examination regulations. None of these four levels leads into the state school service. On the difference between master and MBA see MBA or master.
Which step is realistic afterwards
Three fields where the master genuinely makes the difference.
Adult education. At master level the work is no longer delivering courses but owning programmes: assessing needs, understanding funding logic, building pools of trainers, evidencing quality. In funded projects evaluation is mandatory, and that is exactly the method the master brings.
Education management. Programme planning, quality management and project leadership at providers, associations and foundations, or people development in a company with responsibility for budget and strategy. In many organisations the master is the formal condition for the leadership level, and in publicly funded education it unlocks pay grades that stay closed to a bachelor.
Doctorate. Education science is a well established doctoral field, and the master is the usual entry. Whether a faculty accepts you also depends on your grade average, your topic and a supervision commitment. If you know the goal, choose a programme with a solid research component, see doctorate alongside work.
And the limits: no school service, no state recognition in social work, no regulated health profession. On salary the same applies as everywhere: the changed position moves it, not the title, see salary after your degree. If you are moving in from another sector, the frame is under career change through a degree.
Master in education studies
The questions that come up about this level in almost every conversation.
Will a master in education studies make me a schoolteacher?
No, not with a master either. State school teaching in Germany requires a teacher training degree for the specific school type, normally completed with a state examination or a Master of Education, followed by the preparatory service. A master in education studies is a different qualification, even though both are called a master. Recognition is decided by the federal states.
Can I enter an education master with a bachelor from another field?
Often yes, this subject is one of the most open at entry. What is usually required is educational or social science content in the first degree, or relevant professional practice, frequently topped up with bridging modules in research methods and statistics. Submit module descriptions, not just the certificate, otherwise your prior learning gets underestimated.
What does the master add over the bachelor in practice?
Three things. Leadership roles at providers and in companies that formally require a master. Design work instead of delivery, meaning building programmes and curricula. And the research methods needed for evaluation, needs analysis and evidence of impact. In publicly funded education it also unlocks pay grades that stay closed to a bachelor.
Does the master open the route to a doctorate?
As a rule yes, a master is the usual entry to a doctorate, and education science is a well established doctoral field. Whether a faculty accepts you also depends on your grade average, your topic and a supervision commitment. Choose a programme with a solid research component and write the master thesis towards your later topic.
How long does the master take alongside a job?
Master programmes sit between 60 and 120 ECTS. 120 ECTS at 15 ECTS per semester makes eight semesters, so four years, at 10 ECTS it becomes six. A 90 ECTS programme takes three years at 15 ECTS per semester. The thesis usually occupies one of those semesters and needs connected time.
