Data science bachelor alongside your job

You have picked the subject, this page is about the level. What a bachelor in data science delivers, who needs it, how you get in and how long it takes. Everything about the subject itself is under data science by distance learning.

Fit

When the bachelor is the right level

And when you can save yourself the six years.

The bachelor is the first degree. It is right if you have no higher education qualification yet and need one, because job adverts, pay scales or internal promotion rules use it as a filter. And it is right if you notice that the foundation under your practice is missing: anyone who delivers analyses but cannot argue why a result holds up will build exactly that here.

It is the wrong level in three cases:

  • You already hold a bachelor, even in another subject. Then the master in data science is the shorter route, often from a non-related first degree too.
  • You only need tools, not a degree. A university certificate or a course on a single topic costs you one or two semesters instead of six years, see continuing education alongside work.
  • You want to get away from the arithmetic. If you like data but not statistics, you will spend years in modules that give you nothing. The honest alternative is a subject with data exposure but no mathematical core.

How the level works in general is under part-time bachelor. This page only covers what is different in this subject.

Admission

How you get into this bachelor

Two hurdles, and the formal one is the smaller.

Formal admission follows the usual routes without A-levels: vocational training plus years of work for a subject-related degree, an advanced vocational qualification that often carries general university access, or a trial semester if the evidence is thin. The detail is under studying without the Abitur. Counting as subject-related here are IT occupations, technical training with a maths component, and commercial roles that touch data, for example from controlling or sales steering.

The second hurdle is the one nobody checks before you enrol: your level of maths. A bachelor assumes upper secondary school maths, and if your last equation was twelve years ago you will feel it in the second module. Two things reliably help:

  • A preparatory course before the first semester. Many providers run one, and it is the cheapest month of the whole degree.
  • A low semester load in the first year. The foundation modules take the most time even though they sound the least exciting.
Duration and credit

How long it really takes

Credit transfer shortens less here than elsewhere, but it is reliable.

A bachelor covers 180 ECTS, some programmes 210. What typically gets credited in this subject are introductory modules in programming, databases and project work, so the computer science side. Maths and statistics almost always stay, because they are the academic backbone of the degree. Plan conservatively.

The arithmetic on a typical case: 180 ECTS minus 30 from IT training and an advanced qualification leaves 150 open. At 15 ECTS per semester that is ten semesters, so five years instead of six. At 10 ECTS per semester it would be seven and a half instead of nine. A larger credit block shifts that accordingly. For learning acquired outside higher education, an upper limit of 50 percent of a programme's ECTS usually applies.

Clarify the credit first, then choose the university. With identical prior learning, two providers can be two semesters apart. How the process works is under crediting ECTS, what it does to your timeline under part-time bachelor duration. Which universities in the German-speaking region qualify is best compared on Hochschulnavigator.

Afterwards

What the bachelor opens professionally

And where it expressly is not enough.

The bachelor opens entry into analysis, reporting and data preparation. That is the work which comes up in almost every larger organisation: building figures, delivering analyses for business units, keeping data quality up. On top of that comes the filter effect, and that is the real value: a great many adverts set a degree as a minimum condition, and without one you are not read at all.

Three limits belong with that so you do not miscalculate. First, the bachelor does not open a role with model ownership. Anyone who wants to put forecasting models into production is in many organisations only let near them after years of practice or with a master. Second, in small companies the role often does not exist as a separate position, and data work is an add-on to another function. Third, in regulated areas approval processes and technical supervision decide who may deploy a model, and that runs independently of your degree.

An honest word on salary: the degree alone rarely changes it, the changed role does. More under salary after your degree. If you want to know which level carries in your case, that is exactly the topic for an initial consultation.

Common questions

Bachelor in data science

The questions that come up about this level in almost every conversation.

Do I need A-levels for a bachelor in data science?

Usually not. A completed vocational qualification plus several years of relevant work experience opens access to a subject-related degree, and an advanced vocational qualification often adds general university access. In this subject admission is rarely the hurdle. Your level of maths is.

How much maths does the bachelor actually contain?

More than almost any other part-time subject. Linear algebra, calculus, probability and inferential statistics normally sit in the first semesters and are the precondition for everything that follows. If you drag those modules along instead of understanding them, you will stall later at model evaluation and error interpretation.

How long does the bachelor take alongside a full-time job?

A bachelor covers 180 ECTS. At 15 ECTS per semester that is six years, at 10 ECTS nine. With 30 ECTS credited from IT training and an advanced qualification, 150 remain, so roughly five years at 15 ECTS. Maths and statistics are almost never credited.

Which roles does the bachelor open, and which not?

It opens entry into analysis, reporting and data preparation, and it makes you visible for vacancies that use a degree as a filter. It does not automatically open roles with model ownership, no research work, and in small companies no position that simply does not exist there.

Can I go straight into a master after the bachelor?

As a rule yes, if the bachelor is subject-related. Watch the volume: many master programmes require 210 ECTS on entry, so a 180 ECTS bachelor has to close the gap through bridging modules or creditable practice. Clarify that before you choose the bachelor, not afterwards.
