Controlling bachelor while you keep working

The subject is settled, now it is about the level. The bachelor is the first academic degree and the entry ticket to a career beyond the specialist role. Whether it is the right one depends mostly on what you already bring with you.

Where it sits

When the bachelor is the right level

And when you can save yourself the six years.

The bachelor is a first degree. It is meant for everyone without a higher education qualification, and it satisfies the exact wording you otherwise get filtered out on: a completed degree in business. What the subject covers and how it differs from finance and accounting is set out on the subject page controlling by distance learning.

The bachelor fits if one of these applies to you:

  • You have been doing commercial work for years but hold no academic degree, and that is exactly where your applications fail in the first screening.
  • You want to add a master later. Without a first degree that only works through narrow exceptions, see master without bachelor.
  • You want to move out of the processing profile and into steering, in larger organisations or at group level.

And the case where I advise against it: the German Bilanzbuchhalter sits at the same level as a bachelor in the German Qualifications Framework. It is still not a higher education degree, and that bites in only three places, namely master admission, vacancies that explicitly require a degree, and applications abroad. If you need none of those, a targeted continuing education route saves you several years.

Access

How you get into this level

In controlling there is one feeder that opens two doors at once.

A bachelor requires a university entrance qualification, and in this subject it almost always comes through work rather than school. A completed commercial apprenticeship plus a few years of practice opens access to a subject-related degree, the three formal routes are set out under studying without Abitur.

The Bilanzbuchhalter is the special case here. As a state-regulated advanced vocational qualification it brings general university access in most federal states, and it is at the same time the strongest basis for credit this subject knows. Access and shortening come from the same certificate, more under advanced vocational qualifications and credit.

One point that comes up in almost every first conversation: recognition of your entrance qualification and credit for your prior learning are two separate procedures with different responsibilities. Treating them as one application costs a semester.

Duration

How long it actually takes

Credit shifts the result more than any choice of university.

A bachelor comprises 180 ECTS, in some programmes 210. The duration is that figure divided by your semester load, and alongside a full-time job that realistically sits at 10 to 15 ECTS, see ECTS per semester.

The arithmetic with prior learning: credit 60 ECTS for the Bilanzbuchhalter and relevant years of practice and 120 remain. At 15 ECTS per semester that is eight semesters, so four years instead of six. At 10 ECTS per semester it becomes twelve semesters instead of eighteen. You changed nothing about your working day and saved a third of the time.

For learning acquired outside higher education a cap of 50 percent of the ECTS usually applies. The order matters: clarify the credit first, choose the university second, because with identical paperwork the gap between providers is easily two semesters. The procedure is explained under credit transfer, and providers are documented at Hochschulnavigator.

Comparison

The levels in controlling side by side

Four routes, four purposes, and only one of them matches your starting point.

LevelVolumePart-time durationAccessPurpose in controlling
Certificateusually 5 to 30 ECTSa few months to 2 semestersoften without a formal degreeclosing one concrete gap, such as consolidation or data analysis
Bachelor180 ECTS, some 2108 to 12 semestersAbitur or vocationally qualifiedfirst academic degree, entry into the controlling career path

MBA60 to 120 ECTS4 to 6 semestersdegree plus several years of practicegeneral management, step into overall commercial responsibility

Typical ranges, not commitments by individual universities. The programme regulations are the binding source. More under bachelor while working and controlling as a master.

Afterwards

What the bachelor opens, and what it does not

Honestly both, and the second half is rarely said out loud.

The bachelor opens the entry where formal degrees pre-sort applications: group structures, reporting under international obligations, trainee and talent programmes. And it opens the route to a master.

It does not automatically open a leadership post. Anyone doing the same work after the degree usually earns the same, see salary after your degree. Three limits belong on the table: the bachelor does not qualify you to prepare statutory financial statements, it is no route into the German tax advisory and audit professions with their own examinations, and it does not replace confident experience with the enterprise system your employer runs. In many vacancies that weighs more than the final grade.

Which level carries your goal by the shortest route is something I clarify with you in the initial consultation.

Common questions

Controlling bachelor part-time

The questions that come up in almost every first conversation.

Do I still need a bachelor if I hold the Bilanzbuchhalter?

That depends on your goal. The German Bilanzbuchhalter sits at the same level as a bachelor in the German Qualifications Framework, but it is not a higher education degree. The degree counts for master admission, for vacancies that explicitly ask for a completed business degree, and for applications abroad. If your current goal needs none of those three, you do not need the programme.

How long does a part-time controlling bachelor take?

Without credit, 180 ECTS at 15 points per semester means twelve semesters, so six years. With 60 points credited, eight semesters remain, so four years. The duration is therefore decided by your semester load, not by the university.

Is a bachelor enough for a leadership role in controlling?

For the first step into leadership usually yes, for overall commercial responsibility in larger organisations often not. The bachelor is the entry ticket to that career path, not its end. Anyone aiming at group-level department leadership will regularly meet candidates with a master in the shortlist.

Bachelor or master if I already hold a degree?

Anyone who already holds a first higher education degree normally enters at master level, even coming from a different subject. A second bachelor almost never pays off, because it repeats the same level and costs several years.

How much credit is realistic for the Bilanzbuchhalter?

The range is wide. Some universities credit a flat block, others assess module by module and stay well below that. A cap of 50 percent of a programme's ECTS usually applies. That is exactly why the credit question belongs before the choice of university.
