Business law bachelor while you keep working
Before the question of level comes a question of principle in this subject: do you want the bar or the company? For the first the LL.B. is the wrong degree, for the second it is a very good one.
When the LL.B. is the right level
And when you should not start this level at all.
The most important sentence first, and it holds for both levels: an LL.B. in business law does not make you a fully qualified lawyer. In Germany it grants neither admission to the bar nor access to the judiciary or the prosecution service. Those require the qualification for judicial office, acquired solely through the law degree with the first state examination, the legal traineeship and the second state examination. Austria and Switzerland follow the same logic with their own rules, where the bar associations and the cantonal supervisory authorities are the bodies to ask. What the subject covers is set out on the subject page business law by distance learning.
The LL.B. is the right level if one of these applies:
- You already work close to law, in a firm, a legal department, procurement or HR, and want the formal degree to go with it.
- You want to act with legal confidence inside a company, so drafting contracts, spotting risk and talking to external counsel as an equal.
- You want to add a master later, see master without bachelor for the narrow exceptions without a first degree.
It is the wrong level if your goal is the bar, the judiciary or the prosecution service. Then the route runs through a full law degree, and the LL.B. does not shorten it. It is equally wrong as a shortcut into German tax advisory, which has its own professional examination and its own entry requirements.
How you get into this level
Watch the degree title, here it is a signal in itself.
A bachelor requires a university entrance qualification, and in this subject it often comes through work. A completed commercial or law-related apprenticeship plus a few years of practice opens access to a subject-related degree. Typical feeders are legal and notarial assistants, tax assistants, public administration clerks and office administrators with contract experience. The three formal routes are set out under studying without Abitur. An advanced vocational qualification at DQR level 6, such as the Rechtsfachwirt, adds general university access in many federal states, see advanced vocational qualifications and credit.
A detail that only surfaces at application time: some programmes lead to an LL.B., others to a B.A. or B.Sc. with a legal focus. The academic difference is often smaller than the title suggests, but for legal departments the LL.B. is the clearer signal. Check it before you enrol.
How long it actually takes
Law credits more cautiously than other subjects, and that belongs in the plan.
A bachelor comprises 180 ECTS, in some programmes 210. Legal modules are reading-heavy and fit badly into short slots, so the honest calculation nudges upwards here, see ECTS per semester.
The arithmetic with prior learning: credit 40 ECTS and 140 remain. At 10 ECTS per semester that is 14 semesters instead of 18, so seven years instead of nine. At 15 ECTS per semester you arrive at a good four and a half years. The volume is smaller here than in business administration, because many legal modules are tied to their own examination formats such as case analysis. A cap of 50 percent of the ECTS is the norm.
Clarify the credit first, choose the university second, because with identical paperwork the gap between providers is easily two semesters. The procedure is explained under credit transfer, and providers are documented at Hochschulnavigator.
The levels in business law side by side
Four routes, four purposes, and none of them leads to the bar.
| Level | Volume | Part-time duration | Access | Purpose in business law |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Certificate | usually 5 to 30 ECTS | a few months to 2 semesters | often without a formal degree | covering one topic, such as data protection or compliance |
| Bachelor (LL.B.) | 180 ECTS, some 210 | 8 to 12 semesters | Abitur or vocationally qualified | first academic degree, law-adjacent corporate roles |
| Master (LL.M.) | 60 to 120 ECTS | 4 to 6 semesters | first higher education degree | specialisation, corporate leadership, access to a doctorate |
| MBA | 60 to 120 ECTS | 4 to 6 semesters | degree plus several years of practice | general management rather than legal depth |
None of these levels replaces the German state examinations. Typical ranges, and the programme regulations are the binding source. More under bachelor while working and business law as a master.
What the LL.B. opens, and what it does not
In this subject the limit is the single most important piece of information.
The LL.B. opens the law-adjacent corporate roles: contract management and procurement, compliance and data protection, people and employment law, regulatory work in banking and insurance. The step across into HR management is particularly short. And it opens the route to a master.
It opens no regulated legal profession. Legal advice to third parties in Germany is governed by the Legal Services Act and largely reserved for the admitted professions, while handling legal questions for your own employer is part of the role. Positions such as data protection officer require demonstrated expertise rather than a particular title. In corporate legal departments the leadership is usually reserved for fully qualified lawyers. On pay: the jump comes with the new role, not the title, see salary after your degree. Which route carries your case is something I clarify with you in the initial consultation.
Business law bachelor part-time
The questions that come up in almost every first conversation.
Does the LL.B. make me a lawyer?
No. An LL.B. in business law grants neither admission to the German bar nor access to the judiciary or the prosecution service. Those require the qualification for judicial office, acquired through the law degree with the first state examination, the legal traineeship and the second state examination. A master in business law does not change that either.
Can I switch to a full law degree later?
The law degree remains open at any time, but it essentially starts from the beginning and is not shortened by the LL.B. Individual credits may be recognised on application, yet the state examination itself cannot be replaced that way. Anyone aiming at the bar should therefore choose law from the outset.
Can I study business law without a university entrance qualification?
In most cases yes. A completed commercial or law-related apprenticeship plus several years of work experience opens access to a subject-related degree in Germany. An advanced vocational qualification at DQR level 6, such as the Rechtsfachwirt, adds general university access in many federal states.
How much credit do I get in law?
Less than in other subjects. Credit usually covers the business foundations, and with law-related training some legal modules as well. Many legal modules are tied to their own examination formats such as case analysis and are therefore replaced more cautiously. A cap of 50 percent of the ECTS is the norm.
Which roles does the LL.B. actually open?
Mainly corporate roles: contract management and procurement, compliance and data protection, people and employment law, regulatory work in banking and insurance. It does not open the regulated legal professions, and in corporate legal departments the leadership is usually reserved for fully qualified lawyers.
Which level carries your case
Admission, credit and a matching programme, clarified in one conversation.
The information on this page is general in nature and based on my advisory practice (last updated 31.07.2026). It does not replace an official credit transfer or recognition decision by the respective university and is not legal advice. Specific decisions are made by universities, the ZAB (Germany), the BMBWF (Austria), or the SBFI (Switzerland). I clarify binding next steps with you in the initial consultation.
