Distance Learning in Germany: Key Providers at a Glance

State university, private FH, or international institution? What really matters when choosing a distance learning provider.

The market for distance learning in Germany has been growing for years. More and more working professionals are choosing part-time study, and the number of providers is rising with it. State universities, private universities of applied sciences, international institutions: the selection is enormous. And that is exactly what makes the decision so difficult. Because not every provider fits every situation.

State or Private: Which Distance Learning Provider Fits?

Broadly speaking, distance learning universities in Germany fall into two categories: state and private providers. Both award state-recognised degrees. The difference lies in structure, costs, and level of support.

State distance learning universities are typically significantly cheaper. Semester fees are often under 500 euros per semester. In return, the offering is less flexible. Fixed submission deadlines, set exam dates, and less personal support are common. The study materials are solid, but the student-to-staff ratio is larger. Those who can study independently and are cost-conscious will find good programmes here.

Private distance learning universities cost more, often between 200 and 500 euros per month. In return, they offer flexible exam dates, intensive support, and frequently more modern digital learning platforms. Those who study alongside work and need maximum flexibility benefit from this model.

University of Applied Sciences or University: What Is the Difference in Distance Learning?

Universities of applied sciences (FH/Fachhochschule) and traditional universities differ in distance learning too. FH programmes are more practice-oriented. The content is designed for direct application in the workplace. University programmes have a stronger academic and research focus. For a later doctorate, a university degree is often a prerequisite.

In everyday professional life, the difference between FH and university no longer matters for most employers. A Bachelor is a Bachelor, regardless of whether it comes from an FH or a university. Both types of degree are equivalent in the Bologna system. What matters is the accreditation of the programme, not the type of institution.

Good to know

When choosing your provider, always check for accreditation. Recognised agencies in Germany include FIBAA, ACQUIN, and AQAS. State approval by the ZFU (Central Office for Distance Education) is mandatory for distance learning programmes. Do not sign a contract without ZFU approval.

What to Look for When Choosing a Provider

Accreditation is the first filter. After that, it becomes individual. These criteria help with your decision:

  • Flexibility: Are there fixed exam dates, or can you sit exams flexibly? How often do new semesters start?
  • Study model: Pure online study or blended learning with in-person phases? Both have advantages and disadvantages.
  • Support: How accessible are lecturers and study advisors? Are there personal contacts?
  • Credit transfer: Are prior qualifications from previous training or work experience recognised? This saves time and money.
  • Costs: It is not just the tuition fees that matter. Exam fees, material charges, and travel costs for in-person phases add up.

Why Comparing Alone Is Not Enough

Online comparison portals list dozens of providers. The problem: they show you the programmes, but not which one fits your situation. Your professional experience, time budget, financial options, and goal determine which provider is right for you.

This is exactly where a personal study consultation comes in. I know the differences between providers from practical experience and can tell you where you have the best chances with your profile. Not theoretically, but based on over 120 consultations with working professionals across a wide range of industries and life situations.

In the initial consultation, we look at your qualifications, clarify your time budget, and define your goal. Then I search my partner network of over 60 programmes for the options that truly fit you. This saves you weeks of research.

You will not find the right university on a comparison portal. You find it in a conversation that takes your situation seriously.

International Providers with Distance Learning in Germany

Besides German universities, international institutions also offer distance learning programmes that can be studied in Germany and are recognised there. Programmes from Austria, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland are specifically aimed at the German-speaking market. The advantage: international degrees, often more flexible admission requirements, and English-language modules that represent a plus in the global job market.

Recognition is important here. A degree from an EU university is generally automatically recognised in Germany. For providers outside the EU, you should verify comparability through the anabin database of the KMK (Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education).

The German Distance Learning Market Continues to Grow

Demand for part-time study programmes is rising continuously. Digitalisation, flexible learning formats, and the skills shortage are driving the market. For you, this means: you have more choice than ever before. At the same time, it is becoming harder to maintain an overview.

New providers enter the market, existing ones expand their portfolio. Programmes change, costs are adjusted, admission requirements vary. What applied last year may be different today.

The trend clearly points towards more flexibility: modular programmes where you collect individual certificates and later combine them into a full degree are becoming increasingly popular. This stacking model lowers the entry barrier and gives you the chance to test before committing long-term.

Conclusion

Distance learning in Germany offers you numerous options. State or private, FH or university, online or blended learning. What matters is not the best-known provider, but the one that fits your life situation. If you want to keep an overview, arrange a free consultation. Together, we will find the provider that works for you.
