Degree Recognition: Does Your Qualification Really Count?

A degree is not automatically recognised. How to tell whether your programme is legitimate, and which three criteria really matter.

You have a degree. Perhaps even several. But does it actually count where it matters? Many people confuse holding a degree with automatic recognition. A certificate can be genuine yet worth very little. Not because the programme was bad, but because the formal foundation is missing.

A Degree Is Not the Same as Recognition

The difference is not whether you studied online or on campus. What matters is whether your degree is officially recognised or merely sold. If the university has no state recognition in its home country, the degree stands on shaky ground. Within the country, this can already cause problems. Internationally, it becomes even more difficult.

The Three Benchmarks for a Legitimate Degree

  1. University status: Is it authorised to award academic degrees? Is it state-recognised or at least state-approved?
  2. Programme status: Is the degree programme accredited, reviewed, or approved? Accreditation is the strongest proof of quality.
  3. Intended use: Do you want to use the degree for a job, further studies, or a regulated profession? Different requirements apply depending on the goal.

If these three points are solid, you have a strong foundation. Employers trust the degree. Universities accept it for further programmes. And you take no unnecessary risk.

Good to know

Not every degree needs to be equally recognised in every country. For recognition abroad, there are specific procedures, such as through the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education (KMK) in Germany or the ENIC-NARIC network in Europe. Get advice before you enrol.

How to Spot Dubious Providers

There are warning signs. If a university cannot provide proof of state recognition, exercise caution. If degrees are promised without examinations, you should be sceptical. And if the price is suspiciously low and no accreditation exists, there is a high probability that the degree is worth very little.

The difference is not online or offline. It is officially recognised or merely sold.

How I Help You Verify

In my free initial consultation, I check the recognition for you. You send me the name of the university, the degree, and your goal. I will tell you clearly how legitimate the programme is and whether the degree will be recognised for your purpose.

Conclusion

A degree alone is not enough. What matters is formal recognition. Always check the status of the university, the accreditation of the programme, and whether the degree serves your goal. If you are unsure, let us talk about it. The consultation is free.
