ECTS Credit Transfer: How to Shorten Your Degree

You have prior learning. Use it. How ECTS work, what can be recognised, and how to reach your degree faster.

You have credits. But you are not using them. ECTS are credit points that show how much work a module involves. One point corresponds to roughly 25 to 30 hours of effort. 30 points equal roughly one semester, 60 points one academic year. The system is standardised across Europe. Yet many only see the number and not the advantage.

What Are ECTS and Why Are They Transferable?

ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer System. It was created so that academic achievements are comparable and transferable between universities. This means: what you have already achieved, you can take with you. Previous academic work, relevant continuing education, and applicable work experience can be credited towards a new degree.

What Can Be Recognised?

  • Previous academic achievements: Modules from a discontinued or completed degree programme
  • Continuing education and certificates: Chamber of commerce qualifications, specialist certificates, ECTS-rated courses
  • Work experience: Depending on the university, years of professional experience can be recognised on a flat-rate or individual basis

Good to know

Recognition of prior learning does not only save time. It also reduces costs. Fewer modules mean fewer semesters, and fewer semesters mean lower tuition fees. At some programmes, up to 50% of ECTS can be recognised.

The Difference Lies in Choosing the Right University

Not every university recognises credits the same way. Some are generous, others restrictive. The right choice of university determines how many of your prior achievements actually count. This is exactly where a consultation pays off before you commit.

Some careers do not need a detour. They need smartly used ECTS.

How I Check Your ECTS

In a free initial consultation, I check your transferable ECTS. Afterwards, you will know exactly how many modules and fees you save. And how quickly you can realistically reach your degree.

Conclusion

Getting ECTS credits recognised is one of the most effective levers to shorten your degree and save costs. Check what you bring to the table before you enrol. The right university makes the difference. Admission realistic? Credit transfer possible? Which programme fits? After that, you will have answers.
