Choosing a University: 5 Criteria That Actually Matter

Your choice of university determines your study experience. These 5 criteria help you make an informed decision.

You want to study part-time and face the question: which university suits me? The selection is enormous, the websites promise a lot, and in the end you know less than before. Choosing a university is not an easy task. But with the right criteria, the decision becomes much clearer.

In over 120 consultations, I have seen what truly matters. And what you can safely ignore. Here are the 5 criteria that make the difference.

1. Accreditation and Degree Recognition

The most important question first: is the degree recognized? Accreditation confirms that the university and the program meet certain quality standards. In Germany, this is verified by the Accreditation Council; in Austria, by AQ Austria; internationally, by bodies such as AACSB, EQUIS, or AMBA. Without accreditation, you risk your degree not being recognized later.

Check before enrolling: is the university officially recognized? Is the program accredited? Will the degree be recognized in your country? Especially with international providers, this is not a given.

2. Flexibility of the Study Model

Studying part-time means: your studies must adapt to your daily life, not the other way around. Look closely at how the study model is structured. Are there mandatory in-person dates, or can you organize your time freely? Are lectures available as recordings? How often do you need to be on-site?

Finding the right university means choosing a model that fits your job, your family, and your daily routine. A program with weekly evening lectures works differently than a pure online program with free scheduling.

3. Student Support and Guidance

In part-time studies, you are often on your own. That makes good support all the more important. How accessible are the lecturers? Is there a student advisory service at the university? How quickly do you get answers to your questions?

Feel free to ask before enrolling: who is my contact person? How does communication work? Universities with strong student support have significantly lower dropout rates.

Good to Know

In our consultation process, I check exactly these points for you. I know the support quality of my partner universities firsthand and can tell you where you will be well looked after.

4. Calculate Total Costs Realistically

Tuition fees are only part of the cost. Also consider exam fees, material costs, travel costs for in-person phases, and the graduation fee. Some universities advertise low monthly rates but hide high additional costs.

Create an honest total calculation: what does the program cost from enrollment to graduation? Is installment payment available? Which costs come on top of tuition fees? And do not forget: for many programs in my partner network, the consultation and placement is free of charge for you.

5. Career Services and Alumni Network

A good degree is worth a lot. But a degree plus a strong network is worth more. Check whether the university offers career services: job boards, networking events, mentoring programs. How active is the alumni network? Especially with part-time programs, you benefit enormously from contacts with other working professionals.

What You Can Ignore

Sleek websites, elaborate image videos, and marketing promises say little about the quality of a program. Rankings should also be taken with caution. They often measure research output, not teaching quality for working professionals. Do not be dazzled by appearances.

The best university is not the most famous one. It is the one whose program fits your life.

Why Independent Advice Helps

You can check all five criteria yourself. But it takes time. A lot of time. As an independent study advisor, I know the strengths and weaknesses of over 60 study programs. In a free initial consultation, I match your situation with the right options. That saves you weeks of research.
